Scratching an itch

Scratching an itch

So on the way back from Aberdeen, driving my mother in law’s car back down South, I took the opportunity to stop off in the Lake District. I have a vague memory of going there as a kid with my parents, a similarly vague memory (vague for other reasons) of going there with a bunch of mates in my 20’s and fairly decent memory of going there in the 90s taking pictures for Nike. But I hadn’t been there since, so it seemed like a good idea and it’s such a beautiful part of the country.

I had taken the Hasselblad with me and really wanted to take a particular shot. I make no secret of the fact, that it’s a shot that has been taken before, quite a lot in fact, but not by me, and it is one I always fancied snapping. The Lake District covers a pretty substantial part of Cumbria, and there are sixteen bodies of water, so finding a suitable jetty was the first challenge. I was only there for a night so had done my homework and sussed out where I wanted to go and coincidentally it was where Donald Campbell attempted his ill-fated water speed record, a story that had always fascinated me anyway. The next challenge, although one completely out of my control, was the weather. It is always incredibly changeable in that part of the country but I had been keeping a close eye on my various weather apps and the photography gods must have been smiling that very early morning because when I arrived at my chosen spot, it was flat calm and glassy; hyaline I think is the word.

Always nice to scratch a photography itch.
